Oprah Winfrey

The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude.

Oprah Winfrey

Born on January 29, 1954 in Mississippi, Oprah Gail Winfrey is known to be the most influential woman in the world. She is the only African-American billionaire of the 20th Century, according to Forbes magazine. She has built her own TV network, the Oprah Winfrey Network in 2011.  She is also known for her charity work and her foundation, Family of Better Lives foundation. She’s donated $51 Million, not just for charitable programs, but for the education of the many girls in South Africa.

She didn’t have a normal childhood. She was raised by her Grandmother but when she was six, she lived with her mother. However she was sexually abused since she was nine, by her cousins and friends of her mother. At the age of 14, she became pregnant but her son was born prematurely and did not survive. Her Grandmother remained her biggest fan. She helped her see that she has talent in public speaking and made her believe in her capacity to succeed.

Oprah turned her wounds into a heightened will to get up, move on and search for her mission. She’s been helping other women who were abused in any form and gave them hope. Oprah has a deeper sense of empathy. When she was a newscaster, she’d choke reading tragic news or reporting victorious moments. We’ve seen her laugh and cry with her guests in her then TV show- Oprah. Her empathy remains her strength. Her capability to feel and understand the predicaments of people fueled her to get up and devote her life in helping people and inspiring them to be successful.

Sneak Peek: The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy’s First Graduating Class

Knowing that you could influence people is a divine gift. I believe Oprah knew this and she used this for the good of humanity . She knew that whatever she does, read or follow the world will notice and they will do the same. She’s done just the best things to influence people to also devote their life to do good for others. Leading means ‘leading your people to find success, learning and fulfillment in the role they perform at work, home or in their communities.’

Know your strengths. This is going to be your starting point to know what your mission is. Use your talents to inspire your kids, family members, your team or coworkers to also discover their capabilities and use these talents too to influence others. Like Oprah, we find our voice, and use our voice to influence people to help make this world a better place.
